“Hey, Mia!” Trent Jericho yelled from across the room as he walked into the Breckenridge Saloon. “Wanna dance?” He took off his cowboy hat, which was in sharp contrast to the suit he wore, and held it in his hand. Even though it was out of place in New York, it suited him well. He’d been a cowboy who gave it up to become a lawyer. Mia guessed that old habits died hard. Trent had been a regular for a while and was harmless. Even though he probably had money, he never flaunted it. He was down-to-earth and had never forgotten his roots.
“Trent,” Mia Flynn replied as she placed her hands on her hips, taking him in. “How many times have I told you? I’ll always save a dance for you.”
“Yes! I was hoping you’d say that.” He smiled as he placed his hat on a nearby table and walked purposefully toward her. “Just one dance, though. Then I have to go back to the hotel. I have an important case I’m arguing tomorrow.”
Mia scoffed. “Why don’t you buy a house instead of living in a hotel?”
He shrugged. “Not sure. I guess New York really never seemed like home to me.”
“You really should get yourself a wife.” Mia shook her head as she let him lead her around the dance floor. “With as much money as you spend in here—”
“Why? You offering?” he teased, raising an eyebrow.
Mia couldn’t help but laugh. “Yeah, like I’d marry the likes of you!” He had always been more like a big brother to her than anything else.
He made a big show of placing his hand over his heart. “Miss Flynn, you have mortally wounded me.”
Mia smiled, shaking her head. She and Trent had been friends for a long time, since she first moved to New York. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. One of these days a woman’s going to catch your eye—”
“And I’ll run like hell.” Trent took a step closer as the music came to an end. “One more dance?”
“I thought you had to go home.”
He shrugged, holding out his hand. “One more dance couldn’t hurt.”
She pretended to deliberate as the feather in her blonde, wavy hair bobbed. She’d been a dancehall girl since she moved from Connecticut to New York three years before, after her parents died of influenza. She let out a deep breath. “Sure. Why not?” Mia was getting tired of making a living with men paying her to dance. One day she wanted to have a family of her own, but that wasn’t going to happen. Not here.
A broad smile spread across his face. “Thanks, Mia. I haven’t danced with a lady in a while.”
Mia looked at him sharply. “You were just in here last week.”
Trent raised an eyebrow. “It seems like it’s been a lot longer.” He towered over her as he twirled her expertly around the dance floor. “Say, have you heard from Wyatt Nash lately?” Before he left, Trent and Wyatt had been inseparable, having been best friends for longer than she had known either of them.
“Now, why would I ever hear from him? After the last mess he made in here, he can just stay where he is.” Douglas, a merchant marine, had called Wyatt a cheat and had pulled a knife. He and Wyatt ended up tearing up the place, and Mia was left with the arduous task of cleaning up the mess.

I knew as soon as he opened the door that something was different. Arlo was different. Having spent so long as a kid watching him, waiting for him to notice me, I was pretty good at reading his body language. He could often be morose, surly, and downright rude, but today was not one of those days. He was giving off strangely upbeat and positive vibes.

I shook the thought from my mind and greeted him in our normal way, gliding toward him, allowing my purse to drop to the floor with a satisfying clunk. I pressed my lips to his, kissing him firmly. Unusually, he hesitated. It was momentary, but nevertheless there and definitely out of the ordinary. I knew it wasn’t my imagination. Something was off. When he did start to kiss me, it wasn’t with his normal hunger.

I pulled back, eyeing him cautiously.

“Is something wrong, babe?”

He said nothing, just returned my stare. This was interesting. Kind of like a game of visual chicken. I had seen Arlo and Luke faceoff like this many times, but the two of us never had. Who would look away or say something first? I for one had all the time in the world to watch and wait—a small privilege of the newly unemployed.

While we stood locked in our Mexican standoff, I took the time to drink in Arlo’s appearance. He was sublime. So hard-edged and wild and masculine and… broken. And so wholeheartedly different from his twin brother. After all these years, I still marveled at how two people who were on the face of it identical could be so fundamentally dissimilar as soon as you scratched the surface and moved beyond the physical.

It was Arlo who eventually broke the stalemate, walking further into the house. As he headed down the hall in front of me, I could’ve sworn he’d even had a spring in his step, but I shook the thought from my mind. That kind of glee just wasn’t his MO. Mean and moody was far more his shtick than positive and perky.

I followed, deciding not to pay too much attention to the change in his demeanor. Instead, I stripped off my clothes as we went. I wasn’t there on a social visit; I wanted to get straight down to business, as per usual. Pretty much the only time I felt like a whole person was when Arlo and I were fucking. It was sad but true. The post-coital high was even better, and I had just wanted him inside me as quickly as possible, so I could feel good again. Much to my surprise, instead of heading toward the bedroom as normal, he moved in the opposite direction through the house. Huh?

I stopped in my tracks, perplexed about the bizarre situation unfolding before me.

Wife of one. Mom of three plus a Beagle.

Well, at least that's how I'm described in the confines of my everyday life.

Writing has always been second nature to me. I spent my childhood creating short stories and my collegiate years writing for the campus paper (Go TERPS!) Jump twenty years to the present--I'm still writing. At my day job, I spend most of my time writing capability briefs, white papers, proposals--you name it.

Then one day it hit me! It was time to access my own creative power and bring to life the characters I've created in my mind.

I hope you enjoy my first book, Beautiful Nightmare. It has everything you'd look to find in a paranormal romance-urban fantasy-new age novel. Vampires. Wolves. Love. And so much more!
